EMDR Therapy: Empowering Healing and Transformation

At North Star Counseling and Wellness we offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy to support individuals in their healing journey. EMDR is a scientifically backed psychotherapy approach that has shown remarkable success in treating various psychological difficulties, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and more.

How does EMDR  Help?

EMDR therapy focuses on the underlying emotional and cognitive components of disturbing memories and experiences. It helps individuals process these memories, reducing their impact and enabling them to heal from emotional wounds. By targeting the root cause of distress, EMDR allows clients to develop healthier coping mechanisms and enhance their overall well-being.

What does a typical EMDR session look like?

During an EMDR session, you can expect to engage in the following steps:

  1. Assessment and Preparation: Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to gather information about your background, current challenges, and therapy goals. They will also ensure you have the necessary skills to manage emotional distress effectively.
  2. Identifying Target Memories: Together with your therapist, you will identify specific memories or experiences that contribute to your distress or symptoms. These target memories will be the focus of the EMDR treatment.
  3. Dual Attention Stimulation: Your therapist will guide you through a series of bilateral stimulations, such as eye movements, hand taps, or auditory tones. These bilateral stimulations activate both sides of your brain, facilitating the reprocessing of traumatic memories and associated emotions.
  4. Processing and Integration: As the bilateral stimulation occurs, you will be encouraged to bring attention to the target memory and any associated thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations. Over time, the distress associated with these memories will gradually decrease as new insights and adaptive beliefs emerge.
  5. Closure: At the end of each session, your therapist will guide you through a process of closure to ensure you feel grounded and safe. They will help you develop self-soothing techniques and provide any necessary support.
